Introduction

The stone was lava. The bench was jail. The slide was only for going up. Nobody wrote these down and nobody taught them, yet they appear in more or less the same form across parks, cities, and generations. Koochie Global has been building play structures since 2004, and the way children rewrite them is some of the most useful information a designer receives.

A Rulebook Nobody Published

Every adult reading this knows the rules. The ground beyond a certain point was lava. Touching a particular pole meant safety. The slide had a correct direction and an incorrect one, and the incorrect one was better. A child arriving at an unfamiliar park in an unfamiliar city could join a game already in progress within about a minute, without asking how it worked.

There is a body of research that explains why this happens so consistently. In environmental psychology it is called affordance theory, and the working definition is that features of an environment carry functional significance for whoever is using them. A child looks at a low wall and sees a balance beam. A designer looks at the same wall and sees an edge detail. Both readings are correct. Only one of them gets used.

Where Koochie Global Designs for the Older End

Koochie Play structures are certified to EN 1176 with surfacing to EN 1177, and that part is settled before anything else begins. What sits on top of the certification is a design question, and it comes down to how many different things a structure will let a child do.

A single-purpose item has one answer. A ladder goes up. A slide goes down. A structure with varied handholds, level changes, enclosed volumes, and more than one route through it will be read differently by a six-year-old and a ten-year-old on the same afternoon, and differently again by the same child six months later. Graduated difficulty is part of this. So are the spaces underneath and behind a structure, which almost always get used and almost never appear in a brief.

The Drain Cover Problem

Play researchers have recorded something that should give every designer pause. Incidental physical features of a playground, the kind nobody specified as play elements at all, regularly become focal points for games. A drain cover is a documented example. Meanwhile painted markings and floor spots, added by well-meaning adults specifically to enhance play, have been found in several studies to have little measurable effect on how children actually behave.

The lesson is uncomfortable and useful in equal measure. Investment in something because it looks like play does not guarantee it becomes play. Children make that decision, and they make it based on what a feature lets them do rather than what it was labelled.

Ambiguity Is the Engine

Experimental work on how young children explore has found that they spend more time and attention on objects offering ambiguous cause and effect than on objects producing the expected result. Uncertainty creates the motivation to investigate. Once a thing is fully understood, interest drops. This explains a pattern familiar to anyone who manages a society play area. Equipment with a single obvious function is busiest in the first month and quieter by the third. The structures that hold attention over years tend to be the ones that support several games at once, where the rules can be renegotiated each time a new group arrives. Related research on loose parts, the movable materials children can rearrange themselves, points the same way.

Constructive play rises measurably when children are given components they can move, and the structures they build then get used for imaginative play on top. The underlying design principle, first set out by Simon Nicholson in the early 1970s, is that inventiveness in any environment scales with the number of variables available in it.

Designing Ambiguity Without Writing a Vague Brief

There is a risk in all of this. A brief written to encourage open-ended play can end up simply under-specified, and those are two very different documents. A brief should be exact about certification, free height of fall, age range, load, and site constraints. The openness belongs in the structure that the brief describes. The document describing it stays precise.

The way Koochie Global works a brief follows that split. The conversation opens with what the space needs to allow rather than which products go into it: which ages will use it, at which hours, alongside what else exists on the site. The layout is then built around a count of affordances rather than a count of activities. A structure listing six activities on a product sheet may support three games. One listing three may support a dozen, if the routes through it vary and the volumes beneath it are usable.

In practice that produces a few recurring decisions. At least one element is left deliberately open in function, a mound, a varied climbing face, or a set of level changes that suggest several routes without prescribing one. Sightlines are kept clear, since most invented games begin with a child watching another child start one. And undesignated space is protected in the layout rather than filled, because a game that gets invented still needs somewhere to happen. All of it sits inside EN 1176 and EN 1177 rather than around them.

Reading the Misuse as a Brief

When children use equipment against its intended purpose, the instinct is to correct them. Sitting on the top of the slide platform rather than sliding. Climbing the outside of the structure rather than the ladder. Using the swing frame as a goalpost. Where these behaviours are safe, they are worth recording rather than discouraging, because each one describes something the space is failing to provide.

Children sitting on a platform indicates the site has nowhere comfortable to sit at height with a view of what is happening. Climbing the outside of a structure indicates the sanctioned route stopped being difficult some time ago. Using a frame as a goalpost indicates there is no ball court within reach. Each of these has a specification answer, and none of them requires telling a child to stop.

What to Ask at Brief Stage

The question worth putting to a designer is how many different games a structure will support, not how many activities it lists on the product sheet. Those are different numbers and the second one is usually higher.

Worth specifying explicitly: at least one element that can be used in more than one way; varied handholds and level changes rather than a single sanctioned route; enclosed or semi-enclosed volumes, since hiding and occupying a space are among the most consistent play behaviours recorded; consideration of what happens underneath and behind the structure; and where the site allows it, some provision of movable or manipulable material.
